Annapurna Base Camp Trek
Trip Facts
Trip Introduction:
Annapurna Base Camp Trek, a high glacial basin looks like an oval-shaped plateau. Lying at an altitude of over 4000 m, it is surrounded by the Annapurna mountain range. Trekking to Annapurna Base Camp is a bit shorter as compared to Annapurna Circuit Trek or Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek in the Annapurna region. 10-12 days is quite sufficient to complete the trek. Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) trek is also popularly known as Annapurna Sanctuary Trek.
Annapurna Base Camp Trek: the route
The journey to Annapurna Base Camp begins from Pokhara. It is a one-hour drive to Phedi. From here, we follow the trail uphill through Modi Khola gorge. Then into the lowland bamboo and rhododendrons forests. Further on and we reach a huge rock overhang known as the Hinku Cave. The trail has numerous ascents and descents but offers a wide variety of superb landscapes. We experience low elevation and glacial basins, cultural diversity and diverse flora and fauna.
When you enter into the huge amphitheatre of the base camp, you will find yourself enclosed by a solid wall of snow-capped peaks. Some are higher than 7,000m tall. These include Annapurna I, II, III, IV and Machhapuchhre (Fish tailed mountain). Visit the Annapurna Sanctuary during the better seasons, fall and spring, for clear mornings and evenings. This opens up a glowing panoramic view of snow-capped peaks and starry skies.
The Gurung villages and frequent stops at tea-shop dotted along the way give a unique cultural experience. Like the Sherpa dominant the Everest region, Gurungs are in the Annapurnas. Ever since the route to the sanctuary was discovered by Col. Robert in 1964, trekking to Annapurna Sanctuary has become pilgrimage among the trekkers.
