Dhaulagiri (8167 m)
Trip Facts
Trip Introduction:
Dhaulagiri Expedition to this 8167 m Himalayan massif is the seventh highest mountain in the world. It is located in north central part of Nepal. The crest of the mountain stretches some thirty miles giving structure to an otherwise tangled topography of twisting ridges, glaciers and icefall. Along the main crest, several pyramid-shaped peaks rise. All four of these peaks each rises 7000m over the Kali Gandaki gorge to the southeast within about 30km. The Kali Gandaki gorge lies between Dhaulagiri and Annapurna. This creates a face-off of two eight-thousander giants over the deep Kali Gandaki valley.
Dhaulagiri Expedition: an unforgettable climb
Although the British surveyors in India first sighted Mt Dhaulagiri in the early 1800s, the mountain remained unknown. A Swiss aerial survey in 1949 truly brought the mountain to life. K. Diemberger, P. Diener, M. Dorji, E. Forrer, A. Schelbert & N. Dorji first climbed this magnificent mountain in 1960.
Mt Dhaulagiri expedition trip begins with an overland drive along with the expedition crew. We travel from Kathmandu to Beni Bazaar following the classical route. Along the route, we get exceptional views of the Kali Gandaki gorge that encircles Mt. Dhaulagiri. Also en route, we cross over the snow-capped mountain passes.
The vast majority of ascents till date have been organized via the first ascent route. This is known as the "Normal Route" on the mountain. The climb follows a circuitous route around the mountain from French Col (5334m) to approach the summit from the North East. The unstable weather conditions, with fierce winds and sub-zero temperatures, are the obstacles every expedition to Mt Dhaulagiri face. However, one can ascent from almost any direction. After the summit, we then follow the route up to Jomsom and fly out to Pokhara eventually ending the expedition in Kathmandu.
Mt Dhaulagiri Expedition is best suited during the months of April, May, September, and October.
