Makalu Base Camp Trek
Trip Facts
Trip Introduction:
Makalu Base Camp Trek takes you to one of the most remote and unfrequented areas in Nepal. Hence, the trail goes along the Arun Koshi and Barun Valley, protected as Nepal's newest national park renowned for its natural beauty and rich biodiversity. Most importantly, the Makalu region offers outstanding and diverse trekking routes in the Himalayas. For instance, a rough trail leads past yak pastures and glaciers to the base of Makalu, also recognized as the world's fifth-highest mountain, located 22 km to the east of Everest and 80 km west of Kangchenjunga.
Makalu Base Camp Trek: inviting and full of surprises
This isolated and remote area of the Makalu has been successful at preserving the country's distinctive culture, flora and fauna. Thus, while trekking, we are greeted with high waterfalls cascading into deep gorges, craggy rocks rising from lush green forests, and colourful flowers blooming beneath the white snow peaks. Likewise, rare species of animals and plants flourish in abundance within the undisturbed habitats of this region. One can trek in eastern Nepal from Tumlingtar, north up the Arun Kosi to Sedua and Num. Then, trek further on into the upper Barun Khola valley for a close-up look at Makalu and Chhamlang.
The trek to Makalu base camp is one of the most remote and unfrequented areas in Nepal. The elevated point above Makalu Base Camp provides stunning views of the world's highest mountains. These include Everest (8,850m), Lhotse (8,516m), Makalu (8,463m), Chamlang (7,319m) and Baruntse (7,220m).
