Mt Kanchenjunga Expedition (8,586m)
Trip Facts
Trip Introduction:
Mt. Kanchenjunga Expedition to the world’s 3rd highest mountain and 2nd highest in Nepal standing tall at 8,586m / 28,169 ft is a dream of many avid adventurers. Situated on the Nepal-Sikkim ( India) border, in Eastern Nepal, Mt. Kanchenjunga lures expert climbers every year.
Both on the Nepal side and the India (Sikkim) side of Mt. Kanchenjunga, conservation areas and national parks have been established. On the Nepal side, Kanchenjunga Conservation Area run by the World Wildlife Fund in association with the government of Nepal has a protective sanctuary for Red Panda and many species of birds and plants whereas the India side of Kanchenjunga has a protected park area called Khangchendzonga National Park.
Climbing Mt. Kanchenjunga
Mt. Kanchenjunga Expedition is organized through Nepal due to availability of logistic supports and accessibility. Whereas, restrictions have been placed to climb from Sikkim (India) side. Mount Kanchenjunga is a huge massif, and many satellite peaks rise from its narrow icy ridges. There are five distinct peaks among the Mt. Kanchenjunga massif. Four of which viz., Main Summit, Middle Summit, South Summit, and West Summit (Yalung Khang), are over 8,540m. The highest among these summits is the West Summit standing at an altitude of 8,420m. Some experts even go further to categorize it as a separate 8000m peak.
Mt Kanchenjunga Expedition begins by taking a flight to Bhadrapur. We then, drive to the trek starting point passing through beautiful remote hill villages, where few visitors trek. The trek then leads us to Mount Kanchenjunga’s classic southern Base Camp. From the base camp, we start to ascent the summit of Mt. Kanchenjunga. It is a technical climb, even along the normal route. It is an extremely adventurous climb with technical and intricately mixed rock and ice to the South Col. The entire climb provides stunning views of the mountains and its surroundings. After the successful summit, we climb down and trek back safely to reach Khandenba where we head to Bhadrapur and the next day fly back to Kathmandu.
