Manaslu Expedition 2019
Trip Facts
Trip Introduction:
Mt Manaslu Expedition with Himalayan Global Expedition, to Mt. Manaslu (8163meter /26,763ft) is a trip that defins the mountaineering spirit of a person. This is the highest peak of the Gorkha massif and the eighth highest mountain in the world. It is also known as “Kutung”. It is located about 64 kilometres (40miles) east of Annapurna. Gentle ridges and glaciers of the mountain offer easy ascents from all directions. These eventually conjure into a peak which dominantly towers above its surrounding landscape when seen from afar.
Mt. Manaslu is considered one of the most dangerous mountains in the world and often called the killer Mountain. Manaslu expedition is also considered as one of the best training expedition for Mt. Everest expedition.
The name Manaslu comes from the Sanskrit word “Manasa” and is roughly translated as “Mountain of Spirit”. It was surveyed for ascent by a Japanese expedition in 1952 and attempted upon with a few tries between 1953 and 1956. Another Japanese expedition in 1956 eventually scaled Manaslu and thus forever regarded as “Japanese mountain”.
Mt. Manaslu Expedition Route
Mt. Manaslu Expedition trip starts with a drive from Kathmandu to Arughat, a village in Gorkha district. And then the trek follows up to Manaslu Base Camp (4750m). Heavy clouds and snowfalls almost always surrounds the base camp. After a safe and easy climb of three hours we reach camp 1 (5500m). Subsequently, it is a six hours climb to camp 2 (6400m) from camp 1. Between camp 1 and camp 2 there are many crevasses and is a difficult route. It takes another 6-7 hours from camp 2 to the last camp 3 (7400m). Between camp 2 and camp 3, there are chances of avalanches. This part of the climb consists of steep sections of snow and ice with relative safety towards camp 3. Camp 3 is surrounded by beautiful peaks and breathtaking sceneries.
The summit, our final destination of the expedition is within 8-9 hours from the last Camp 3. From the summit of Mt. Manaslu we enjoy beautiful panorama of the Himalayas. After the summit, we descend slowly. Compared to climbing, it is easier and faster to descend, however, sometimes, heavy fog and dense white-out cover the entire section till camp 3. There have also been numerous casualties because of dense white-out.
