Trip Introduction:
Nanga Parbat Expedition takes us to northern Pakistan. Nanga Parbat (8,126 m) is the ninth highest after Mt. Manaslu. It is also the 14th most prominent mountain in the world. Located in Gilgit -Baltistan region of Pakistan this mountain derives its name from Sanskrit meaning "Naked Mountain”.
The Mountain: Nanga Parbat
Nanga Parbat has three faces, Rakhiot Face (North), Diamir face (West) and Rupal face (South). A silver plateau dominates the Rakhiot face while the Diamir face is rocky at the beginning but gradually turns into ice fields around the peak. The Rupal face is considered as the highest ice wall in the world. It is 4,600m from the base of the mountain to the peak. Reinhold Messner, a living mountaineering legend from Italy, once said that "everyone who has ever stood at the foot of this face and stared up above, studied it or flown over it, cannot help but be amazed by its enormous size.
Nanga Parbat Expedition: the history
Austrian climber Hermann Buhl climbed Nanga Parbat in 1953. Till then it always created tragedies for mountaineers that attempted to climb it. Many have perished on the slopes of this mountain since 1895. Even in recent years, it still manages to claim the human lives of mountaineers seeking adventure and thrill. Its victims have included those in pursuit of new and un-climbed routes leading to its summit.
Europeans discovered the Nanga Parbat peak during the nineteenth century. In 1854, the Schlagintweit brothers came from Munich (Germany) to the Himalayas. They drew a panoramic view, which is the first known picture of Nanga Parbat. In 1857, one of the brothers was murdered in Kashgar, thus beginning the curse of the Nanga Parbat.
